ubitricity to install up to 1,000 lamp post chargers in Berlin

UPDATE: The project extension has been approved, ubitricity is currently installing 1,000  lamppost charge points in Berlin in total. See how many of those are already in service on our map

—————————–

Converting lamp posts into charge points will enable the rapid expansion of public charging infrastructure in Germany’s capital and is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2022.

Berlin, March 28, 2022: ubitricity, manufacturer and operator of charging solutions for electric vehicles and a wholly owned subsidiary of the Shell Group, has secured a public tender from the city of Berlin for at least 200 public lamp post charge points. The first lamp post chargers will be installed in the districts of Steglitz-Zehlendorf and Marzahn-Hellersdorf and will use ubitricity’s “Heinz” charger, which was developed specifically for the German market.

The installation of the first 200 charge points will be coordinated in close cooperation with the Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Urban Mobility, Consumer Protection and Climate Action. The implementation takes place within the framework of a clean air project funded by the federal government. Should the project extension already applied for be approved, up to 800 additional lamp post charge points could be installed.

With these lamp post chargers, ubitricity is bringing the successful model of on-street lamp post charging from London and other cities in the UK to Germany, with adaptions for local requirements. The lamp posts chargers will use the existing infrastructure and enable city dwellers without a private parking space (in Berlin this accounts for around 60% of drivers/residents) to charge their cars conveniently near their home.

The “Heinz” chargers, which were developed together with ebee Smart Technologies on Berlin’s EUREF campus, will be mounted on the column and therefore keep footpaths clear. With a charging capacity of 3.7 kW, it offers optimal conditions for urban charging according to the resident’s usual parking times. ubitricity thus follows the everyday habits of drivers and allows many charging stations to be installed quickly and cost-effectively in residential areas, taking existing network capacities into account.

Supplied exclusively with renewable energies

The selection of the locations is carried out in close coordination with Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Urban Mobility, Consumer Protection and Climate Action as well as with the districts and considers the local conditions of the individual districts. All lamp post charging points are supplied exclusively with electricity from renewable energies by Shell Energy Retail GmbH.

At ubitricity’s lamp post charge points, residents have the option of charging with their usual tariffs from a Mobility Service Provider (MSP), such as Shell Recharge, or ad-hoc using a mounted QR code. Ad-hoc charging works without registration or membership. For both variants, only a standard type 2 charging cable is required.

Daniel Kunkel, CEO of ubitricity, said: “We are excited to bring ubitricity’s successful lamp post charging to Berlin. We are proud of the contribution we can make to the city’s e-mobility transformation with our lamp post charge points. Using the existing infrastructure for public charge points is one of the key ways to make electric vehicles possible for all drivers.”

Fabian Ziegler, CEO of Shell in Germany: “In summer 2021, the German government decided to strive for climate neutrality by 2045. This is ambitious, but feasible, provided everyone joins in. We want to be part of the solution and help with the switch to electric vehicles by offering charging options for every occasion – at home, at work, on the road and with ubitricity overnight at lamp posts. We assume that in the future only one in five charging processes will take place at petrol stations.
